I can tell you that s2Member does not deal specifically with comments at all, as these are protected through a broader perspective with Page/Post Restrictions in general. In other words, protecting a Post/Page with s2Member, automatically locks the spool of Comments on that Post/Page, because access to the Permalink is denied for anyone that does not have adequate permission.

Are any of you running BuddyPress when this happens?
( the default BuddyPress theme does not display comments on Pages )
Are any of you using s2Member's Alternative View Protection?

So far we've been unable to reproduce this.
~Awaiting additional feedback.

When I published it, the comments template was not there. I double checked all of my wordpress comments settings and made sure the page had comments enabled, as well as checked my theme to make sure it was using the standard wordpress comments template tag.

When I removed the s2member access restriction, the comments template did show as it is supposed to.

So, I don't know if maybe this is bug or something I missed in s2member settings, but thought I would see if anyone had any ideas here.
