Next, the plugin list page would include a message stating s2Member had been disabled because the plugin file does not exist.
I tried re-adding it via the plug-in > Add interface and - although it said it worked - the plug-in list would not include s2Member.
I removed the s2Member, s2member-files and s2Member-logs folders, re-added the plugin via the admin dashboard and it now is listed as intended, and I can activate it and move on.
Figured I'd let you know, in case this is not a sporadic glitch.
Also: any way to export/import s2member config?
