Do you have s2Member's Logging/Debugging routines on? If not, please turn those on so you/we can see the IPN events associated with this transaction. That will shed light on what happened in this particular case. See: s2Member -> PayPal Options -> Account Details -> Logging/Debugging.
Thankfully they sent me an email.
When I checked their account, s2Member had not changed their Role from Subscriber to s2Member Level 1.
What version of s2Member did you first start with? If you've been working with s2Member for awhile now, this would be expected. That is, some earlier versions of s2Member, did NOT collect this information, because it was not necessary in previous releases. In those cases, s2Member assumes PayPal by default, even though nothing was officially recorded for Users/Members that signed up under an earlier installation of s2Member. s2Member is backward compatible in this regard, with previous releases.
Only one account had Paid Subscr. Gateway set to PayPal(r) Code:PayPal)
all others users were blank. (I swiched them all to PayPal Code Pay)
Yes, all of this information is collected after checkout and/or during registration on your site. If some of this information is missing, I would suspect that there are errors in your s2Member log files somewhere. That being said, please remember that things like Custom Value, Paid Subscr. ID are not collected for non-paying Users. That is, s2Member only collects and stores this information for paying Members. It's fine if you filled it in manually, but it's not necessary for non-paying Users.
All except today's new subscriber had a Paid Subscr. ID
Most had the Custom Value set to "www.pixelator.biz." A few were just blank, so i set it to my URL.
All except two had Registration IPs
