s2Member does send a confirmation email to those that pay for a membership and create a new account. WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Options -> Confirmation Email

If a user upgrades an existing account, although there is an email sent too, there isn't an interface to edit it yet. Here's a hack that you can use for that, though: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10368&p=33365&hilit=+modification+email#p33365

Membership Level Emails

I have s2Member set up to send emails to my newly registered users (free subscribers), but I would like emails sent out to the members that sign up for my paid member levels as well. For example, if they sign up for membership level 1, I would like an email to go out that thanks them for paying, but also enticing them to pay for level 2. Is that possible?
