I wonder if my issue has something to do with an aborted attempt to use BuddyPress. Although BP has been deleted for some time, I wonder if it changed some code somewhere. Cheers any way.

Try disabling that and see if it goes away. If that doesn't work, I recommend disabling other plugins or looking into your theme files to see where it's coming from.
