There will be a couple of articles a week that will be premium. I would like a couple of paragraphs of each premium article to be seen to everybody and then if a person is not a paid member they would get a message that either they have to log in to read further or become a member.

The teaser part is important for me because I think that people would like to get a glimpse of what they buy before they buy it. I tried this with a tag, but it hides the whole article, only the title is seen.

Please see this previous post for an answer:

Ideally it would be nice if I could also sell each article individually.

You can use a buy now button.
For more info go here:

Also, for some reason the generated "Unsubscribe" button returns with an error from PayPal saying that I need to log in to the account.

In order to unsubscribe(cancel) the PayPal recurring subscription has to be canceled. PayPal handles that part.

The s2Member Unsuscribe Button generated is just a reminder.

Since every paid Membership is associated with a PayPal® Subscription; and every PayPal® Subscription is associated with a PayPal® Account; your Members will always have a PayPal® Account of their own, which is tied to their Membership with you. So... a Member can simply log into their own PayPal® account and cancel their Subscription(s) with you at anytime, all on their own. However, some Customers do not realize this. So, if you would like to make it clearer ( easier ) for Members to cancel their own Subscription(s), you can provide this Cancellation Button for them on your Login Welcome Page, or somewhere in the support section of your website. Note... you don't have to use this Cancellation Button at all, if you don't want to. It's completely optional.

I am on the fresh lite version of s2member. Been looking at the plugin and the tutorioals for a couple of weeks now.
What I would like to accomplish is a setup like that:

Most of the content in our web is for free, has always been.
There is a free level of members who are people who have subscribed to the web - they get no particular benefit from that, but they have subscribed, so let them be.
A second level of subscribers is reserved for a group who previously were subscribers of our magazine's paper issue, which we no longer publish. They get the premium content free for 6 months then they would have to pay for their subscription.
And a third level is for new subscribers on the web.

I can get the levels all right, the difficult part for me is with the premium content.

Ideally it would be nice if I could also sell each article individually. But the two packages don't seem to mach since the membership subscription I have set up is a quarterly subscription of these premium articles.

Ideas?

Also, for some reason the generated "Unsubscribe" button returns with an error from PayPal saying that I need to log in to the account.
