Can I hide BBpress content but not lock pages?

Rather than keep the entire forum locked & unavailable, can I protect forum topic content like a protected page/post? I would like to whet the appetite of potential members by showing them topic titles (and maybe excerpts) but not the entire topic & discussion. Is this possible?

Maybe this can be done by editing the bbpress theme and using php tags.
