The free version should still work the same way, nothing was changed there. Did you double check your s2member-PayPal configuration? WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Options
Do you have logging enabled? WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Options -> Account Details -> Enable Logging Routines. After running another test purchase the log files should be available via FTP in /wp-content/plugins/s2member-logs/ Could you please post the entries related to your problem?
