Backing up the s2Member Encryption Key

Postby BobTabor » July 1st, 2011, 5:34 pm

Once you configure this, you do NOT want to change it; not ever. In fact, it is a VERY good idea to keep this backed up in a safe place, just in case you need to move your site, or re-install s2Member in the future. Some of the sensitive data that s2Member stores, will be encrypted with this Key. If you change it, that data can no longer be read, even by s2Member itself.

Cool ... so, what's the right way to back it up / restore it? I'd like to get this solid before I go live. Thanks!

I guess copying it somewhere safe so you can copy/paste it back in there in case you lose it, would be good enough. Email it to yourself, write it in a notebook, etc.

Well, the problem is I can't use my mouse to select that field of data in my browser, so ... I can't copy it ... I *could* just take a screenshot, but I was wondering if that was what you guys had in mind or not?

s2Member keeps an internal record of your last 10 Security Encryption Keys, just in case you change it and need to recover; but yes, it's still a good idea to keep a backup of your own inside a text file somewhere. If your Security Encryption Key is already locked in, just click the [Edit] link next to it, and press OK. That will unlock the field ( just don't actually change the value ), but that way you CAN hilite the value and press Ctrl + C to copy it, use Right Click -> Copy.
