Use Open Registration for new members access level 1?

Basically I need to allow temporarily open registration on my site so that my existing customers can create their new account and automatically have access to s2member level 1 so they can immediately get all of the downloads and protected pages...
Unfortunately this site has over 700 posts...Editing the download links manually with custom keys, and then after everyone has registered going back to edit them so only level 1 will have access...does not sound like a lot of fun.
If anyone has any suggestions on a workaround, I would really appreciate it
