registration form validation not working

not sure what happened but I have some custom fields on my registration form that are required but when I click register without filling in each required field, instead of a popup that lists all the errors in them, I now just get two errors embedded on the page that say:
ERROR: Please enter a username.
ERROR: Please type your e-mail address.
I see all of the custom fields are there in the form. However, there is a radio button that is set to required but the asterick is not displaying which is also strange.
All of this occurred it seems when I downloaded the plugin called Wordpress Users. None of the s2member shortcodes would work using that plugin for some reason. So I deactivated it, then removed that plugin and the s2member shortcodes on the pages started working again (even the wysiwyg editor was not recognizing line breaks between sentences).
However, not sure why the form field validation on the registration page is still not working properly like before though. Any ideas?
