Restricting access to PDF documents

Hi

I'm setting up a restricted access resource centre containing PDF documents. I want users to be able to navigate to the unrestricted access resources page and see a list of documents. On that page they can click to register or login. When they have logged in they are directed back to this unrestricted page and can click on any document link to go to the restricted PDF. If they have not logged-in and they click on a PDF document link then they will be sent to the login screen and then directed either to their chosen document or back to the resources page (It doesn't matter which).

Can anybody tell me how to set this up.
