Stop Charges!

Postby MODassic » December 20th, 2011, 10:24 am

Hello,
We had a site setup, and we took it down about 1 week ago.

We just got a call from someone who claimed that they were charged by the site... It could be a fishy call, but it started me thinking.

Is there anything that we need to do when taking down an s2member site to make sure that people will no longer get charged? Is it possible for a transaction to take place (say with recurring billing) after the site has been taken down?

If the person saved the order button and used it later, yes, as long as your PayPal account is still active. It could also be that the person subscribed to your membership when you were still open and then when you closed, you didn't cancel his subscription so PayPal charged him again after the term was up.

Hey MODassic did you actually cancel that person subscription? Have they contacted you again with another charge or not yet (maybe they will in the next few days when it was supposed to be time for charging them again?)

Cristian when you say "you didn't cancel his subscription" you mean in paypal? So are you saying that MODassic was supposed to login to his paypal account and do that there?

Just curious and trying to learn more about how cancellations work.

The seller's PayPal account has a recurring subscriptions manager where active subscriptions can be canceled. The buyer (i.e., the subscriber) can also cancel the subscription from within their PayPal account.

As the seller, you can provide your customers with a cancellation button that will send them directly to the page on PayPal where they can cancel their subscription (see WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Buttons -> PayPal Subscr Cancellation Buttons).

With s2Member Pro and Pro-Forms, you can provide your customers a cancellation form. When your customer clicks the cancel button, s2Member is silently notified by PayPal in the background and their s2Member account is delete/demoted).

According to PayPal's policy on recurring billing, you MUST provide each and every Customer with an easy to way to cancel future charges.

Finally, it is the responsibility (I believe) of the site owner to ensure that any current subscriptions are cancelled when taking down a site. As I said earlier, this can be done from the seller's PayPal account.
