Members are not able to access protected files

Download restrictions are configured. I have put files in the s2 member files folder and linked to them as per instructions. When I attempt to download them, I am prompted for login information. (So far so good.)
However, when I enter valid log-in information for an account that should have access, I am denied. I cannot access the files.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what might be happening here?

By the way...latest version of s2Member Pro is running.

Could you post more info on how you protected the files?
- What dir(s) the files are in
- The link you're using for the file: URL or shortcode
- Your download settings: screenshot
WP Admin -> s2Member -> Download Options -> BasicThanks!

Sure. As per instructions (I'm setting up a podcast):
Dir = the prescribed "s2member-files" folder
link =
http://www.MY-DOMAIN.com/?s2member_file ... E-NAME.xml (I've also tried s2member_file_remote=yes, because I saw it somewhere else on the Primo Themes site/forum). I've obviously replaced the actual domain and file name.
Download settings = 99999999 per 365 days for all members level 1 and above, 0 per 365 days for level 0

Thanks, Orbithb.
When you try to download from while logged into your admin account, are you allowed to?
Did you try while logged into another account? What level does it have? Could you confirm the user role in the account's profile?

More clarity - after working on this for a while.
It seems that downloads are impossible - with any level of access (even admin and those given permission) when using ?s2member_file_remote=1 or ?s2member_file_remote=yes. When the auth window pops up, and credentials are entered, they are always rejected. (This is a problem, as I'm trying to set up a podcast.) Downloads work when using straightforward links on the site itself.
Any advice?

Could you check this thread and see if any of the suggestions fix the problem?
