I use the widget in the sidebar. When a user clicks on edit my profile, in the pop-up window a lot of "n" appear. It starts nnnnnnnnnnnn. Then in all of the custom fields there are nn before the name of the custom field and in Save there are nn before and after the button.
Any idea what could be causing this?

No idea.
Could you please attach a screenshot of it? Did you edit the PHP files for that at all?

Just a wild guess at this point; but this could be caused by uploading the /s2member/ directory to your server in binary format instead of in ASCII format; or with your FTP client set to "Auto". Try using FileZilla to upload the latest version of s2Member.
Plugins should be uploaded with Transfer Mode = "Auto".Reference articles:

We tried changing the doing some changes in the sign up form, so all would appear in spanish, following the steps in another thread from this forum. But this seemed to mess it all up. We uploaded the files again and just left it in English.
