This might seem obvious, but I'm struggling to have a bespoke page for each user. What I'm specifically trying to do is have a general access gallery that anyone can access; however for those who I've done wedding photography for they can access e.g. alistaircunningham.com/client-area/username - these areas would be prohibited for anyone else.

I've seen examples on the forum people have achieved this by (or at least it seems) but no specific guide on how to do it.

That, though, will create a page for each user, which isn't what you're after, but the concept of how it works is valid. Basically you give each person a custom capability with his username, and then restrict the access to their private page with that custom capability.

In your case the membership would not be a portal, but from their profiles you can manually give these capabilities to your wedding photography clients. WP Admin -> Users -> [username] -> s2Member Configuration & Profile Fields -> Custom Capabilities
