S2 Member auto generating custom field not password field.

I have a custom field setup in my registration form called eBook activation Code. This is a code I send to activate my product. I want this code in the S2 DB so I can check that people registering to get the bonus downloads have actually purchased my product.
I had a sale today. S2 Member autogened the activation code and not the password as far as I can tell from looking at the subscriber/member information on the dashboard.
I can edit the member and input the correct activation key information but I don't want to have to do that on every subscriber.
My product can be purchased from an embedded shopping cart in the product or off my site. Either way, they buyer gets a standard download of info.
My thoughts were to use the activation key to control access to the member download page. The key is quite long - longer than you have setup options for.
So I am not sure where the activation code came from. It is almost the same as one that I issue. Far too long for a generated password.
Also It appears that S2 did not auto generate a password unless the "ebook activation code" custom field is in fact supposed to be the password.
I got an email that my customer had registered to the site but not his username or password. As adminstrator should I not get this information?
