PayPal Email Address & Site Cancelation Fees

Postby drbyte » May 15th, 2011, 3:23 am

Hi Jason

Well, I need to punish some people

Some thoughts

-People need to register with the same email address they used at check out (PayPal, CCBill, and others)
-Impose a small cancellation fee if they choose to cancel online. If they call then it will be free..meaning, once they choose to cancel the membership it will automatically charge their card a 99 Cents fee

The reason behind this

When you have a free trial period, lets say for a 3 days, some do register and cancel on the same day. Well they have free access to the site for 3 full days. Now, after 3 days they register again using the same credit card but when it comes to the site they use another email address since the one they used the first time was demoted to subscriber with no premier privilege and no longer can be used as a new member.

Having said that, if the member is required to register with the same email used with PayPal or any other service then they have no choice but to use it or maybe it can be populated already. Once they land on the site, if the email is registered then they can't create a new membership.

Am I loosing my brain?

This is actually a very interesting query Sam.

It's for these same reasons why I don't offer free trials anymore so I look forward to see what Jason can maybe suggest!

Yeah, what you mention is a problem for sure.

But many users won't use regularly the same email address they have for PayPal, I know I don't. How would you overcome that complaint?

And cookies are easy to delete, so that's not a good option, unless you provide such an improved experience thanks to the cookies that they would hesitate to delete them, but you can hardly achieve that in 3 days.

Then there are Flash cookies, which most people don't know how to delete, you could try those, and there are browser footprints that you could use to identify users. You'd have to read up on them to find how they're used, I don't have any experience with them.
