Measures To Prevent Shared Accounts For Downloads

Postby thedude » October 5th, 2010, 6:24 pm

How can we limit the prevalence of users that share accounts in order to gain access to downloadable goods?

I would like to strengthen the download links for accounts. Here's a video I found for doing that on s2Member: http://www.s2member.com/file-download-options-video/

I watched the video but I don't think it addressed the ability to limit the number of times a link works for a user account that's shared (multiple people using same login), does it?

If a user shared an account with another individual they'd only be counted as one user still correct?

I'm trying to find a solution to prevent individuals, who are sharing accounts, from downloading files.

I need a link to:
1. Only work X number of times for each user account
2. Not work when accounts are shared. That is, the link will work for the first individual that attempts but not the second individual even if they're using the same user account.

I'm currently using:
1. IP Access Restrictions to limit access to X number of IP addresses per month.

2. Basic Download Restrictions but this doesn't apply to individuals sharing accounts since, "Repeated downloads of the same exact file are NOT tabulated against the totals below. Once a file has been downloaded, future downloads of the same exact file, by the same exact Member will not be counted against them. In other words, if a Member downloads the same file three times, the system only counts that as one unique download."

Any insight on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to serve WP post/page URLs with a user's ID or username attached to the end of the URL so it can be tracked using a traffic stats service like Google Analytics or another service? Doing so would permit the owner to see exactly what account is being abused.

Finally, has anyone considered implementing a tougher login such as PayPal sign-in? People would be less willing to share their user account if it required they share their PayPal login credentials.

Perhaps there's a way to capture the IP addresses that access a user account and store them for easy viewing?
