Categories not showing in Category widget

I created a category to match each protected level and protected content by category and then created a post in some categories.

When I log in at level 4, I see the category widget in the sidebar, but receive a message of "No Categories." I was expecting to see the current and lower level categories listed (where posts existed).

Also, when I try to load the category pages (http://mydomain.com/category/), I get a 404 - page not found error.

What I are be doing wrong?

Ignore this ... I was using the default widget built into my theme (the theme is from WP 2.5. I like the layout.). Replacing it with the WP 3.0 category widget corrected the problem
