Trouble integrating with Aweber

Postby dianne » September 29th, 2011, 11:53 am

I've had some issues with people being able to access members-only pages when they have not completed their Aweber confirmation. This has been going on about a week, and I am unable to resolve thru the videos - I've even watched the one about having issues with Aweber - that did not help. I noticed something was wrong when a large amount of people were getting stuck in confirmation mode, when I contacted them, they said they never received a confirmation email.

For example, this is what is SUPPOSED to happen:
When the person registers as a free member at the site, they first click on a link that takes them to the registration option. They enter in the information required, then it takes them to a page which tells them to check their email for a verification link. After they click on the verfication link, they are taken to the log in page. They are now able to access members only pages.

However, this is what IS happening:
When the person registers, they click on the link that takes them to the registration option. After entering their information, they are immediately taken to the login option, and then are able to access members only pages. They DO NOT RECEIVE a confirmation link, so there is no question as to whether they are deciding or not deciding to click on it. I tested this several times yesterday, I never received a confirmation email.

If they don't confirm, then according to the Aweber rules, I cannot email them with their welcome information. I cannot email them with updates, or even invite them to upgrade to the premium membership. I cannot contact them at all.

Also, if they don't confirm, I can't stop auto-spam registrations.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I need to get moving on some paid member pages, and if I cannot contact the members, there's no point. This is frustrating.

Thanks!
Dianne

Just to reiterate, I watched as many videos as I could find on API integrations. I even found the video about List Server Issues (http://www.s2member.com/list-server-issues-video/) and watched it thru. That did not resolve my problem. The problem is NOT that people are not confirming, the problem is that they are not RECEIVING a confirmation email. Because I went thru the subscription process using several different valid email addresses yesterday, I know that I did not receive a confirmation email at any of those email addresses.

People WERE getting confirmation emails, but now they are not. I have to resolve this. I can't move forward unless I have the capability to contact people after they subscribe.

Anyone???

I wish i could help you but i am using MailChimp, so my knowledge of aweber is ZERO, unfortunately. Hang on, someone will surely chime in. Usually Cristian, or Jason are in here once a day, but other users have been very helpful. It might be a time zone issue too if they have not responded yet.

Well, that the user gets taken to the login page after registration is the normal behavior. The confirmation email is for the AWeber opt-in, not for the account with WordPress.

Have you checked your AWeber account to see if the names are added to the list? Did you use the hack to avoid the double opt-in?

Could you enable logging so we get some info on what's happening with the list server integration? WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Options -> Account Details -> Enable Logging (logging is general, but the interface is still only in the gateways options)

It could be that if you had used those email addresses before in your test, if still in the list or if you opted out, the system won't treat you the same again.

Cristian,

I already had the option for enable logging checked.

This morning, I had a Plus member (paid member level 1) email me that she is not getting any updates from me. She never got the confirmation email, and therefore cannot be placed into my aweber list for Plus members. I'm at a loss for this, IT WAS WORKING!! And now it isn't. People WERE getting the confirmation email and now they are not. It seems to be since the last upgrade. I'm very uncomfortable with programming of any kind. I need step by step instructions on how to do any kind of coding.

Also, when I used those email addresses to test the system, I did not opt out, I simply deleted them altogether from both aweber and S2. I've done this before with customers who were having issues and that method eliminated the system from treating them differently and they were able to recreate their accounts.

I had several new members join over the weekend, I cannot send them the welcome email. I don't know what to do.

OK. Could you please look for the log file in the directory /wp-content/plugins/s2member-logs/ and post it here removing any private info?

What is your setting for WP Admin -> s2Member -> General Options -> Email Configuration -> New User? Are you using the WordPress default or a custom one?

It's weird that it was working before and now isn't. Could you update to the latest v111003 to see if that helps?

Under the New User Email Configuration, it is checked "Yes (customize the New User Emails with s2Member)". I don't remember ever changing this, and I wouldn't know the difference. What should it be?

How do I access the directory?

I did the update. Will check to see if it helped at all.

Upgrading did not help. I created a new user, and did not get the confirmation email.

Not only that, NOW the new user I created, which is at the free membership level, can access the paid (level 1) pages.

It's not that I really care whether they accidentally get the information for a short time, but those who did pay, are going to demand refunds if they find out that you can access paid info without paying. Not good.

Could you change the New User email to the default WP setting and see if that fixes the email problem?

About the content restriction problem, could you check what role the new user has in his profile? WP Admin -> Users -> All -> Edit user -> Role

Could you post the URL of one of the protected pages that your user was able to see?

Also, this video may help: http://www.s2member.com/content-restric ... ble-video/

I changed the new user email to the default WP setting, it did not fix the problem. I still did not get the welcome email from aweber. It did change the email that comes from wordpress, instead of the email stating that it's notifying "Your Username/Password for: Home Education Council of America", the email now just has the username and password and no other verbiage.

The new user has the role of free subscriber, but now cannot access the plus member (level 1) page.

This is the page that the new member was able to access, and should not be able to:
http://hecoa.com/plus-members

I can't add anymore content to that page until I know that it's going to be restricted. The restriction seems to be fine now, but the confirmation email from aweber is critical to being able to contact members. It isn't working for free subscribers or level 1 subscribers.

It would be really great if you are only going to answer this once a day, if you could give me more suggestions. Kinda frustrating to try the one thing, it doesn't fix the problem, then have to wait 24 hours to try something else.

I'm sorry, I come online once a day and if the user is online at the same time, I may exchange some posts during that session, but if there's nothing new before I go offline, then it'll be until next day that I see any new replies. :|

About the email, got it. When you said "welcome email" earlier, I thought you were talking about the New User one, but I see now that that was working fine, you were talking about the one you send from AWeber. Since the custom New User email was working fine, you can change it back.

About the restricted page, when I tried to load it I got properly sent to your Membership Options page and the vars at the end of the URL show that it is restricted at Level 1, so Level 0 (free) or non-logged in users won't be allowed to load it.
http://hecoa.com/join-hecoa?s2member_seeking=page-743&s2member_level_req=1

About the AWeber log, check the /wp-content/plugins/s2member-logs/ directory using an FTP client like FileZilla, or the file manager in your cPanel (if you have that). Do you see a log for AWeber there? If so, do you see entries at the end that belong to users who didn't get the confirmation email? If so, please post them here x'ing out private info.

By the way, did you ask the user to check the spam folder to make sure the AWeber confirmation email isn't there?

You said the AWeber integration was working until recently. Could you check if your AWeber settings are still correct? I don't know what could have changed them, but it's fine to double-check. WP Admin -> s2Member -> API / List Servers -> AWeber

Re: Trouble integrating with Aweber

I have double checked all the settings. Everything is correct according to the training videos.

The new user is not being sent the confirmation email - it's not even connecting with aweber. If they were getting a confirmation email and it was going to their junk folder, then there would be an indication in my aweber account that the person is waiting for confirmation. I know this, again, I'm doing faux registrations on my end and they are simply not connecting with aweber. And yes, I am completely deleting them each time, AND clearing my cache, to make sure there is no conflict.

It's getting really frustrating - every day I see that there are new users - I can't even sort them by date to see who they are so that I can manually add them to aweber and bypass this problem. To find out who they are, I would have to go thru the list page by page on S2 and look for recent dates. I'm not upgrading to Pro at this point, we've been at this for a week now with no resolution. I haven't even sent out my weekly newsletter, it's 3 days late, waiting for this problem to get resolved.

I'm sorry, I'm stumped as you are. Like you say, it was working before, so I don't know what is the problem now. One thing I can think of is a possible plugin conflict with something you added/updated recently.

Could you please try, as a test during a moment you can do this, deactivating all your other plugins and try a new registration to see if then the user gets added to AWeber? Maybe there's a plugin conflict preventing the AWeber integration from working properly, I don't know.

I emailed Jason about your problem and he should be around soon to help.

Re: Trouble integrating with Aweber

Thanks for the heads up on this thread.
~ and thanks for your patience, I'm sorry about the delayed response.

It sounds like you might be running into a problem with the From: header inside the email subscription request that s2Member sends on behalf of the User/Member subscribing to your mailing list. It has recently come to my attention that the WP-Mail-SMTP plugin may create a problem for s2Member's AWeber integration. Are you running this plugin, or another like it? If not, what other plugins are you running please?

This problem can occur when/if you configure an outside SMTP server that MUST have emails sent From: a specific address, one which is directly associated with your SMTP account. In cases such as this, s2Member may be unable to get mail through to AWeber properly, because the From: header may NOT match their built-in PayPal Email Parser pattern matching, and even if it does, it may NOT come From: your User/Member like it's suppose to.

One solution is to use s2Member's Custom Parser, see this thread please:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=15496&p=45306#p45306

If you continue to have trouble in this regard, I would create this directory and file:
/wp-content/mu-plugins/s2-aweber-debug.php ( these are MUST USE plugins )
Code: Select all
<?php
add_filter
("ws_plugin__s2member_aweber_bcc", "s2_aweber_debug");
function s2_aweber_debug ()
    {
        return get_bloginfo ("admin_email");
    }
?>

With this file in place, you'll get a copy of the email subscription request that s2Member sends, and you can post a copy of that email here in the forum. We can help you out be taking a look at the email, looking for problematic areas. When/if you post the email, please see if you can get the RAW and/or Original email. For instance, with GMail, go to the Reply drop-down menu and choose Show Original. That's what we need to see please.

I don't know how to do anything with directories - but I have to report that the issue seems to have resolved itself.

I made only ONE change since the last time I posted, I made a selection in this section under the API/List Servers:
Automate Un-Subscribe/Opt-Outs?

I don't remember setting this up initially, so when I read it, it made sense that I should select all. I then selected Yes to this question:
Also Process List Transitions Automatically?

After I made that change, I went back to the user list, deleted the test email and user, then logged out and signed the test user up again. THIS time, the test user received the confirmation email from Aweber. Since that time, all new level 0 members have received and complied with the confirmation email.

Also, since that day, two of my free members have transitioned from the level 0 to level 1 membership, and I didn't have to do a thing to make that happen, yay!!

I have another question, but will post as a different topic.

s2Member v111011 was released today, and should also resolve the AWeber issue that I mentioned. However, we still DO recommend that (if possible) you use s2Member's Custom Email Parser for AWeber integration. viewtopic.php?f=36&t=15496&p=45306#p45306

Re: Trouble integrating with Aweber

Postby grh395 » October 15th, 2011, 5:29 am

Hi - I am new to S2member but really like it - thank you. I am using the free version.

But I am having a little trouble integrating with Aweber too.

I have set up S2member with:
most access to the site does not require registration
access to areas with free downloads requires membership
    membership is free
    aweber integration

If someone wants to download something from the restricted areas, they are invited to register.

On registration, they get sent an email with their login details and an S2 generated password.

They are also sent an email by Aweber asking them to confirm their request for info - Aweber's double opt-in - but most people do not bother to respond to this, because they have already been sent a password and can log into the site.

As a consequence, almost all the members who have registered are not confirmed in my Aweber list - so do not get included in any mailings from the autoresponder.

How can I change this so that members have to confirm their opt into my aweber list before they receive a password, and can log in to download from the restriced areas?

Is it best to just disable the Double Opt In option in Aweber? Os is there a simple option within S2 that allows me to keep the Aweber double opt in?

I would appreciate your help. :)
