Restricting purchases?

Postby Graphis » November 9th, 2010, 11:52 am

Hi,

I'm having trouble setting up s2Member quite how I want it, and I'm hoping someone here will have a helpful suggestion or two!

This is what I'm trying to do:
On my site, I'm selling special reports. I've created a post for each report, which details the contents and then finishes with a 'Buy Now' button that takes the customer to PayPal. What I actually want, is for certain reports to be only available to certain member levels. BUT, the moment I implement any post restrictions, potential customers from a lower member level cannot see those posts at all. This means that they don't know what they could be buying! I'd prefer the restriction to kick in at the point of purchase, rather than at the point of viewing, so they can read the post, make a decision to buy, and then find they have to upgrade their membership in order to buy that report.

Is this possible at all? Or am I going about this the wrong way? Any and all suggestions as to how to make this work gratefully received!

Many thanks.

I think you are going about it the wrong way. By restricting posts by membership level you are limiting what can be viewed by those with lower membership levels.

What would be more appropriate would be to set up a page showing what is being offered, with an appropriate paypal button for the item to be purchased. Ensure that the 'product' page is viewable to all membership levels.

If certain products are listed for specific membership levels then create a product page for each level.

That would be my approach, though I can't say if it is the best one to use.

You can make it so only certain membership levels can see part of the page --- so if they are logged in at the right membership they could get the download, otherwise they would see the "upgrade your membership and get this report" stuff.

The main problem is Paypal only lets users upgrade no more than 20% of what they paid....So make sure that upgrading is not more than 20% of the lower level price...I ended up changing my whole site into just 1 price 1 membership level because of that.

chelle,

Only part of a page? How do I do that? Interesting news about PayPal too: I didn't know that. Thanks.

ndavidson,

Yes, I think you're right. That seems the best way to do it. Many thanks.

In the s2member option in WP there is stuff on how to do it under API, it is best to use a plugin like pre-publish reminder too so you can just copy the code there and paste it into pre-publish reminder so it shows up everytime you write the post :)
