Demotion + Subscriber ID questions

We have had a member who failed their payments and were demoted correctly, but their Paypal subscription ID was still on their wordpress user page in the admin section. When the user went to update their payment info and re-activate the account, they got a new subscription ID. Viewing the logs, it doesn't appear that the first subscription ID was cancelled until the new one was created.

What exactly happens along with an automated demotion besides the demotion itself?
