Unique IP Access Restrictions

Postby walmo » October 26th, 2011, 7:57 pm

I am a s2member newbie setting up a wordpress membership site for primary schools in Australia.

Can someone please clarify for me what happens when a maximum IP addresses allowed is exceeded?
I am hoping that it might be possible to restrict all new IP login attempts to be denied without excluding those already logged in.

Alternatively would it be possible to have a notification sent to the administrator when the maximum IP addresses is exceeded?

I really don't want member schools to be locked out (but understand the need to be prudent about potential link sharing)

Many thanks

1. Unique IP restrictions, makes it so that if the limit is exceeded then users who exceed will be sent a warning and won't be able to login.

2. I believe he is sent an email by default.

I don't think the admin is sent an email notice about it. Users will contact you when they get locked out, though. You may want to raise the IPs limit to fit your situation. WP Admin -> s2Member -> Restriction Options -> Unique IP

'Users will contact you when they get locked out'
That is my concern. That a school might get locked out because on of their teachers shared the login details.

Oh, so several people would be using the same account? I see. Well, in that case you'll need to either set a very high IP limit or just remove that restriction. :|

In my case i do not want to have my members share their access with others. But... Since my members use desktops, laptops, iPhone, iPads, etc.... I do not want to have them manage their unique ip restriction among all their devices.

How "number of IPs" is calculated ? One ip number by device ?

Thanks for your answer

I don't know much about networks, but I believe that's the case, I don't think two machines can have the same IP even if they're in the same local network.
