how to remove default categories from registration page

I found this link on a related topic which included a moderator's input. Look to the 4th comment down to see the code involved in changing the default categories. I assume if you can access this code you could also just delete the unwanted default category, such as first name or last name, as opposed to translating it as discussed in the post.

If someone tries this please let me know how it goes and any suggestions.

I just went into profile.inc.php and changed the last name and first name settings from true to false. I hope that works but am not sure of the result yet.
