Specific Post/Page Restrictions issue

Postby Axman1413 » March 22nd, 2011, 9:09 pm

Greeting everyone...Johnny here.

This is my first post here, but I'm not new to the biz. I would like to start off my expressing my gratitude for the most awesome members plugin I have seen. I do plan on getting the upgrade as my site grows.

I have been using the plugin successfully and everything is working fine. I have created a digital product and followed the SP/P process to deliver the product. I had a few glitches with the process, probably due to me and user error. But all access seems to be working fine through PayPal.

That's the problem though. I can access all those pages by entering the direct URL to the pages, without even being logged in to the site. I use Weaver Theme and have the capability to remover the pages from the main menu. So technically, no one will find the pages without first purchasing and getting the emailed link.

But for those savvy enough, they could just copy the URL from the browser and send it out to a friend.

I have checked and recheck that the page ID's and have made sure none of the pages possess any other conflict member restrictions. So what can I do to secure these page URLs?

Here is the site URL: http://fanpagefanatics.net

Thanks,

Johnny

Hi. Thanks for the kudos! :D

I understand your concern. Few questions:

- Did you make sure you were logged out of your account before you tried viewing those protected pages?
- Are you using a www and without it for your domain? viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1066
- What method did you use to protect the pages and how did you configure it?

Ok were are getting somewhere. I was logged out and using another laptop to view the page.

I used the specific post/page option with the page id's...all checked and saved.

so I checked the www vs. non and that is the issue. I can access the pages with the non-www. When i put in the www. I get redirected as I'm supposed to.

Now here is something interesting...if i type in www.mydomain.net/parent/subpage/ (which is the actual URLfor a subpage of the parent page) it gets block

But if I type in www.mydomain.net.subpage it gets redirected to http://mydomain.net/parent/subpage/

The WP general settings are set for http://mydomain.net
**************************************************************************************

While typing this reply I decided to hop on the other computer after I changed those setting to include the www and now both URL formats are blocked. Now no matter what I type in, it gets redirected to the registration page. Which is all good.

And I can now navigate through all the rest of the protected video course. Now I am assuming that this Specific Post/Page process is "cookie"able. Meaning that once a buyer links to the pages once they no longer have to use the link to access the pages? But if they give the Actual page URL to a friend, who uses it from a different IP address, then it won't work?

Thanks for reporting back. I'm glad that you could solve it. :)

s2Member's Unique IP Restrictions are used as the basis for determining how many unique IPs are actually allowed to view any single point of entry. So when we talk about things being tied to a particular IP Address, what we really mean is that it's tied to the Unique IP Restrictions configured by the site owner. In other words, in the case of Specific Post/Page Access, a link is only valid for a specific number of IP addresses accessing that one point of entry.

So let me break this down so you can see how s2Member works internally:

  • Customer pays for Post ID# 121.
  • s2Member generates a Specific Post/Page Access Link for them, taking them to Post ID #121; and also emails this link.
  • The first time a Customer hits this link, s2Member records 1 unique IP address that has gained access through that specific link.
  • The next time a Customer hits this link, if their IP is different, s2Member will record 2 unique IP addresses having gained access through that specific link.

If enough unique IPs gain access through this one single entry point they were given access to ( i.e. they've shared their link! ), then s2Member's security protection kicks in and locks everyone out of this link. This behavior can be configured under s2Member -> General Options -> Unique IP Restrictions.

So this prevents a customer from spreading their link, or blogging it, and then everyone getting in. However, it still leaves room for a customer to have multiple IPs they access the system from (possibly from a laptop at work, and then a home computer on a different IP, or possibly a customer on a network with dynamic IP assignment).

The site owner can also gain control over this by re-configuring the default settings that s2Member uses for Unique IP Restrictions. In rare cases, s2Member's Unique IP Restrictions can also be disabled completely, by choosing "unlimited" from the drop-down menu in that configuration panel.

Thanks all your replies. That was what I thought. After my last post, I played around with it for a bit and had a client test a link for me.

Everything is working great. The www thing was the biggest issue. I have only been using this for a little under month now, and have gone over all the features in and out. I have all the ones working that pertain to my site for now.

I would just like to say that as my site grows and my business grows, I hope to create more exposure for you. I really do think this is the best plugin for anyone wanting to run a membership site. And since that is what I am teaching, I will only recommend things I believe in.

Thanks again for all your help.

Thank you Johnny!

It's great to know you're liking the plugin so much. Jason and the development team are certainly doing a wonderful job. :)

I also feel the same way about recommending things, they have to be something I myself believe in, so I can perfectly understand you.

Have you looked at the affiliate program? http://websharks-inc.com/affiliates/

Thanks Cristian-

I have signed up for the affiliate program, and there will be a banner on my website shortly.

Say...I haven't had the chance to do much searching...I am using Symposium for some of the features on my website: forum, mail, chat...Does Primo have any suggestions for these items... I think the layout of the Symposium features, is ok...but I'm looking to have more options.

You're welcome. :)

I don't know about plugins for that, but I'll ask Jason.

Welcome to our affiliate program Johnny!

Gotchya. Symposium. Sorry, I don't have any experience with that plugin. However, you might want to try BuddyPress, because it's widely supported and there are many plugins available. s2Member is compatible with BuddyPress.
