I'm wondering if there is a way that can enable members to have a little more control over their accounts...

Lets say a site has multiple categories (books, mp3, movies, CDs, ...) ..that particular member is not interested in reading books and wants that category and it's post hidden when he/she logs in....He/she want to see only mp3, movies, and CDs on the site

What would be the correct hook for this to happen...

It's always nice to give members some freedom..it tends somehow to keep them as members

Giving them a setting to hide certain categories although they have access to them, or selling them only the categories they want?

Not really Cris....It's a option you give them to control....let's say it's a site were the whole family can enjoy but you want the movies part hidden when your kids are on it......When the adults want to enjoy and watch some movies they can simply turn it on and there you have it...

Think of it like a parental control on TV..Rather than password we have option to hid the whole category all together.

How would the account re-enable adult content when it's parent controlled, though? If it's editable from the profile, the kids could enable it themselves, right? Maybe requiring a parental control password, separate from the account's one, I don't know.

You could also have accounts in pairs. One for the parents and another one for minors, each with different access, probably using ccap, tags or categories. This tutorial Jason created may give an idea of how to accomplish it:
